A World Cup referee finally showed a yellow card for diving, but it was the wrong call

Just when you thought Brazil’s World Cup couldn’t get any worse, Oscar was denied a clear penalty in the third-place match. Down 2-0 to The Netherlands after a horrible first 45 minutes, Brazil should have had a chance to trim the deficit from the penalty spot in the 68th minute, but Algerian referee Djamel Haimoudi ruled that Oscar simulated contact from Holland’s Daley Blind.

Oscar may have fallen a bit dramatically, but he was clearly impeded by Blind. The contact injured the Dutch midfielder, forcing him to leave the game.

Referees have the right to punish players who dive to try and earn a penalty, but until Saturday, not a single yellow card had been shown in the 62 games completed so far. It’s easy to criticize players who fall easily looking for a call (like Arjen Robben, who publicly apologized for diving against Mexico), but referees…
